Beef Pilau

Beef pilau is a Swahili dish. It is popular in East African Countries. It’s spicy and very delicious. Best served with stew of your choice, salad or vegetables. The recipe below is pilau served with vegetables and a scoop of guacamole.

Ingredients you need:

  • 3 cups of rice (this depends on people being served)
  • 1/2 kg of beef steak
  • 6 cups of water
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 1 piece of ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
  • 2 royco beef cubes
  • 1 tablespoon of black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of pilau masala ( preferably homemade- grounded wholemeal pilau masala)
  • 1 tablespoon of garam masala
  • 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 onion
  • 2 big tomatoes
  • 1 green pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Coriander stems
  • Coriander leaves

Ingredients for guacamole:

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 onion
  • 1 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 lemon

Recipe:

  • Chop 1/2 kg of beef steak into small pieces
  • Boil the meat
  • Cut 1 onion into small pieces and set it aside, grate 4 cloves of garlic and 1 piece of ginger set aside, grate 2 tomatoes set aside, grate green pepper set aside and cut the coriander stems & coriander leaves set aside.
  • Blend the onions, ginger, garlic, and coriander stems together into a fine paste, set aside.
  • Blend the grated tomatoes and green pepper together into a fine paste and set aside.
  • After the meat has boiled, shallow fry it until it turns into a nice golden brown colour and crunchy then set it aside.
  • Put the onions paste in the cooking pot fry it, add the meat. Mix it well let the paste blend in with the meat.
  • Add the tomato- green pepper paste, 1 tablespoon of tomato paste, 1 tablespoon of black pepper, 2 royco beef cubes, 1 tablespoon of garam masala, 2 tablespoons of pilau masala, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix it.
  • Add 3 cups of rice after cleaning the rice. Under low heat, mix the rice and the beef. Add 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of soy sauce as you mix the rice and let the spice blend in together with the rice.
  • Add 6 cups of water. Under medium heat, leave the pilau to boil.
  • 10 minutes before turning off the heat or once the water has reduced. Reduce heat. Leave it to dry under low heat.
  • Sprinkle coriander leaves as you wait for the pilau to dry.
  • Once the water is out, pilau is dry. Turn off the heat

Guacamole recipe:

  • Chop 1 onion into small pieces and put them in a bowl. Add 1 chopped tomato, 2 avocados, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper and squeeze 1/2 a lemon (it gives the guacamole a nice sour taste)
  • Mash it into a fine paste
  • Serve pilau, a scoop(s) of guacamole, the stew you love, salad, or vegetables. Your meal looks delectable. Enjoy your meal!
