Beef Biryani

This is a Swahili dish, it is famous in the Kenyan Coastal region. It is a spicy and delicious dish. It is best served for lunch or supper. Beef biryani is accompanied by rice. This dish is traditionally eaten using hands. Scroll down to check out the ingredients needed and the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of rice ( use standard measuring cups)
  • Salt
  • Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 kg of beef (diced)
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1 piece of green pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of pilau whole mix
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
  • 5 big potatoes
  • 1 big onion
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 piece of ginger
  • 2 beef cubes
  • 1 and 1/2 cups of fermented milk

Recipe:

  • Prepare the ingredients, cut the onions into circles, and set them aside
  • Grate garlic and ginger or cut them into very tiny pieces and set them aside
  • Peel 5 big potatoes, wash them thoroughly, and dice them into cubes, sprinkle 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and salt on the potatoes without water.
  • Cut the tomatoes into medium-sized pieces and green pepper into small pieces.
  • Using a cooking pot or a wok, pour in vegetable oil, pre-heat the oil before deep-frying.
  • Put the onions in the hot oil, let them deep-fry until they turn golden brown. Set them aside.
  • Using the same oil, deep-fry the diced potatoes coated with turmeric powder for 5 minutes.
  • Drain the excess vegetable oil in a separate container. Using the same wok or cooking pot, fry the pilau whole mix, grated ginger, and garlic.
  • Add 1/2 kg of beef. Let it fry for about 5 minutes.
  • Add the tomatoes and green pepper. Stir and mix everything. Cover the cooking pot or wok let the tomatoes cook for about 5 minutes under medium heat.
  • Add the deep-fried potatoes to the beef and mix well.
  • Add the deep-fried onions and mix well.
  • Sprinkle 2 beef cubes, 1 teaspoon of salt, and mix everything well and gently.
  • Add 1 and 1/2 cups of fermented milk to the beef. Mix well, cover the cooking pot and let it slow cook under low heat for 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, scoop 2 tablespoons of the vegetable oil used for deep-frying. Add it into a separate cooking pot
  • Add 4 cups of hot water to the cooking pot and sprinkle 1 tablespoon of salt.
  • Bring the water to a boil, add 2 cups of rice into the cooking pot.
  • Mix 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder with 2 tablespoons of water and add it to the rice. Cover the rice and let it cook under low heat.
  • The food is ready, mix the beef biryani with rice in the cooking pot and serve it together while mixed or serve the rice and place the beef biryani on top.
  • Beef biryani can be served with kachumbari or pieces of lemon. Enjoy your meal.
